Stop being Lazy – I

August 21, 2007

Being Lazy means the lack of drive to work, the lack of desire and commitment to start taking action on something. Laziness is definitely one of the biggest sins of mankind. What determines success or failure is action and if you are lazy you know, you never take action and you are bound to fail.Is laziness a disease? Not really, probably can be considered as a mental disease and any mental disease you have absolute control to overcome. You don’t need a prescription from a doctor to be away from it.

I believe that being Lazy is a CHOICE. Its about what you want to do and what you do not. Say if I want you to move away from your chair and start doing some work outside. If I tell you there is something interesting that is waiting for you outside, you might not be all that excited and motivated to go out. However if I were to tell you, there is a Fire in the building the next moment you start running to save your life.

If you want to stop being lazy first rekindle that hidden fire in you. Fire comes out a of a purpose. Why? If you were to clean your room and you wonder why should I, the fire is missing and if you have a good reason for WHY? then you start doing it. The fire is knowing the answer WHY?

Laziness is not inherited, it is not a disease, it is probably infectious, it does not stay with someone all the time. If needed you would still run away from the place you are. So Laziness is not an inherent property of a person. It is a property that is chosen.

Make the best choice. Stop being lazy…

To be continued..

For me, laziness arises out of lack of inspiration and accumulation of negative thoughts in the subtle mind. Negative thoughts are like dust which gets into the machinery of the mind and restrict it to provide impetus for the positive chain reactions of mind.

Reason, there is inherent urge to grow and when a person could not able to clear the obstacles and adversaries dominate him or her, slowness of mind is the result. Laziness is the child of adversaries. Those who overcome become active and practical and those don’t get into negative frame of mind. Ignition in their mind from a illumined person is the key.

    Wait for a response

Very true being lazy only means lack of inspiration. Negative thoughts are killers, it can be easily waded off as well.

It is about what you want to focus on. When you focus on the negatives they begin to accumulate. As you are reading this, can you think of the most inspiring event that ever occurred in your life? Or something that really inspired you? I am sure you can and this is not a negative thought.

Begin to focus on all possible events that can only motivate and as the mind gets used to these then you seldom think of negatives.

May I say I have a 12 year old son who, despite our constant berating is …lazy. He will go to the bathroom when its work time and stay for hours. He will stand and stare for hours instead of cleaning. If you walk away from him after giving him a chore he will start goofing off. All of this despite grounding and losing privileges as punishment. He cries when my husband makes him do push ups and arm circles when he doesn’t do his chores.

All of his teachers have noted this laziness in him, and they are puzzled as his brother doesn’t act this way. His teachers note he will do work as slowly as he can and make up stories when its not done.

This child is not lazy by choice I believe, he just is that way. his father (my ex) is also lazy, as are 2 of his uncles. If you were to spend time with him you would think he was smoking pot or something. One teacher noted to me he’s an astronaut- always out in space. Another told me he must be a hero in another world because he goes there all the time.

Perhaps he is proof laziness is heredity. It is not controllable. It is a defect.

I don’t think laziness is genetically inherited, but I do think you can inherit a lazy attitude from your parents/family and not even realise it. My mother has never worked and has no self control in any area of her life. In turn, she never bothered to discipline my brother, sister and I or encourage us to stay in education. We were seriously overfed and put in front of the TV or kept at home as children. If I wanted to quit something, I knew my mother would never try to stop me. I never had to study or get good grades and was taught that I never needed to work at anything if I didn’t want to. Quitting was always the best option. My mother was the best example of this. I also had no good female rolemodels anywhere else in my family. Only one of my aunt’s has kept a job and they all try to get men to look after them by moaning or crying. To me, it is like a family of toddlers whinging for attention and money. It is pathetic.

My father made some effort by working to keep a roof over our heads and pay for my mother not to work and he did make some attempts to take us swimming one year and help me study for a maths exam when I was in the first grade. I respect him for that, and as he wasn’t home much he wasn’t able to do a lot else. He put in work where he could.

I left home at 19 with no personal skills, seriously overweight, a bad education and no hobbies or interests outside of watching TV. I thought that was fine. My first job interview was absolute hell. I was laughed out of the office. It was a complete shock. I moved in with two other girls and found out very quickly that I had absolutely NO drive whatsoever to do anything and had missed out most of the milestones that other people my age had reached. I hadn’t taken a single driving lesson, didn’t know how to revise for an exam or sit a job interview, couldn’t write a CV, could do nothing in the way of housework/DIY/cooking, didn’t know that fast food every night was bad and constantly looked for parent figures in other people or at least someone to listen to me and give me advice.

It has been extremely difficult to catch up on all the life skills and training I should have had as a child and I never know if I am doing the right thing. I have zero confidence.

I have since lost some weight, found a steady job and taken a college course, but I doubt I will ever be able to catch up with my school mates, who went on to university and found proper jobs. They all have cars and are setting up home and I can barely afford a tiny flat in a dangerous area of town. I am on very low wages and, at 24, still cannot drive a car! I am not at all stupid and having to sit in an office all day doing mind-numbing work that a monkey could do is pretty degrading and depressing. I have so much to catch up on that it can be daunting. I will keep at it because I know I have no choice unless I want to end up in a council estate stuck in a dead end job for the rest of my life.

I will never forgive my parents (my mother epsecially) for what they did and most importantly, what they didn’t do. They taught me nothing that I needed to succeed in the world and talking to them now, it is clear that they never actually wanted children. They just liked the idea of a family. I don’t want children of my own as I am terrified of passing on the same attitudes and lessons to them. I couldn’t do that to a child. It is setting them up for failure.

I try to motivate my younger sister and cousins to do well and work hard while they are still young as I know how difficult is it to change your personality later on in life. Children need discipline and encouragement in equal measures and just as importantly, someone to be a role model, talk to them and take an interest in who they are and what they need. My parents never gave a crap and I was aware of that from a young age. Kids don’t miss things like that. Too many mothers/fathers substitute a TV or computer game for parenting and expect children to just work it out by themselves and it is no wonder we have become a lazy, disconnected society.

Any parents reading this… please don’t leave it to the school or the media to take care of your children! They may argue and moan now, but they will respect you and thank you for being a good role model later on! Don’t teach your kids to be lazy as you are setting them up for a much harder life!

Wow Charlie. You’ve given me alot to think about and as a parent who stuck their children in front of a TV, I know it was a mistake. Not just from what you have stated here, but because of how my children are. I see impassivsity and it really upsets me. I had already begun several months ago to try to teach and motivate them. I hope it’s not too late to show them that we are not put on this earth to watch it go by. We are here to participate and be active.
